We have put a small selection of places to visit and things to do on this page. We have hardly mentioned the wonderful, walks, mountain climbs, fishing, boating and golf available. There are of course many more and you may wish to look at some of the following websites which give more information:

Boat trips

In the season there are 2 trips from the slipway by the hotel.

One goes down Loch Glencoul to view Britain’s highest waterfall, Eas-Coul-Aulin taking in the seal colonies on the way

The other visits the remote Kerrachar Gardens, beautifully maintained by the owners who sell a wide variety of their plants

Handa Island bird sanctuary

The famous bird sanctuary of Handa Island is only a few miles north.

Maryck Museum of Childhood

Over the hill south to Unapool there is the Maryck Museum of Childhood – an interesting collection and great home-made cakes!

Ardvreck Castle

Ardvreck Castle is 7 miles south and dates back to 1490 with fascinating historical connections and a beautiful outlook over Loch Assynt

We have a folder in the house of a selection of places of interest for day trips and visits

Beaches

There are some wonderful sandy, clean and beautiful beaches along the north-west and north coast of Sutherland.

Ones we like include:

Scourie Beach

the nearest to Kylesku with a large expanse of sand when the tide is out and lots of rock pools to explore. Great walks around the cliffs and rocks.

Sandwood Bay

If you are feeling energetic it is worth the 9 mile round trip from the car park. You park at Blairmore which is past Kinlochbervie and basically keep right on to the end of the road.

Our first trip to Sandwood Bay resulted in the sun coming out just as we arrived and glinting on the double bay with huge expanse of golden sand, sand dunes, rocks and nothing else but silence! Well worth it and we hope the weather is as kind to you as it was to us.

Achmelvich Bay

Are we just lucky or what? Every time we go there the sun seems to shine. What a great beach – only a few miles from Lochinver and well worth taking a couple of hours there – or even longer – on your tour along the Lochinver Coastal Route. There are great cliff-top walks from the beach.

Oldshoremore Bay – this is a secluded beach near the road just south of Sandwood Bay. The same sort of beauty without the walk.
